She Walks In Beauty
By Lord Byron
She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that’s best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes;
Thus mellowed to that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies.
One shade the more, one ray the less,
Had half impaired the nameless grace
Which waves in every raven tress,
Or softly lightens o’er her face;
Where thoughts serenely sweet express,
How pure, how dear their dwelling-place.
And on that cheek, and o’er that brow,
So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,
The smiles that win, the tints that glow,
But tell of days in goodness spent,
A mind at peace with all below,
A heart whose love is innocent!
Lord Byron(22 January 1788 -: 19 April 1824) was an English poet and politician whose life is as well -known as his poetry. He was a leading figure in the Romantic movement. His work include Childe Harold's Pilgrimage (1812-1818) and Don Jaun (1818-1820). "She Walks In Beauty" is a short lyrical poem in iambic tetrameter written in 1813.
The poem is about an unnamed woman.In this poem speaker compare her to lots of beautiful things. Byron start the poem with phrase,
"She walks in beauty, like the night Of cloudless climes and starry skies;"
The poet creats an image of a dark ,clear sky – with twinkling stars , and make a contrast between brightness and darkness. Night shows evil and –darkness. It is compared to a beautiful woman.
It shows that even the darkest things have beauty in them. The poet mentions the night as cloudless and starry. He enforces this idea by saying " the best of dark and bright." Poet portrays not only physical beauty of woman but also her internal beauty.
"Beauty is not in face; beauty is light in the heart."
Further he balance between "Shade" and – light in the lady 's beauty is so perfect. This "nameless grace" is –visible in every lock of "serenely" ( clearly and clamly). Her "Sweet" expression shows what 's going on inside her mind called "dwelling place" of her thought. The sweetness shows her pure and innocent mind.
In last stanza he mention the woman 's inner and outer characteristics. Her cheek and her smiles are beautiful. In this phrases "days in goodness spent" , " mind at peace" , and " heart whose love is innocent ", we understand that the woman's inner thoughts are also as pure and graceful just as her appearance.
